The old figures still float around online. When the Roadster was first shown in 2017, Tesla quoted $200,000 for the base car and $250,000 for the Founders Series. Several reports repeat the $200,000 number, but it dates from 2017 and has not been confirmed for the new car. When Will the Roadster Be Released?

Elon Musk said production is planned for 2028, but Tesla has not given customers a firm delivery date. Considering the car's history of slipping from 2020 to 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and beyond, it's wise to treat that date cautiously.

• Import costs. Even the old $200,000 figure is a multi-crore amount in rupees, and import duties and taxes would add a lot more.
• Limited support. With no official service network, repairs, software updates and parts would be your own responsibility.
• Parts and repairs. Bodywork on a low-volume supercar means imported parts and long waits.
• Road legality. Some versions shown are not approved for public roads at all.
